The rim is the detail worth paying attention to here. Rather than a flat disc, the edge lifts in a soft continuous curve, which frames whatever is on the plate and stops sauces making a run for the tablecloth. It is a small piece of design that chefs have used for years and that most domestic tableware ignores entirely.

Two sizes are offered. The 20cm plate works as a side, a starter or a dessert plate, and it is the one that gets used most in practice. The 25cm is a full dinner plate, generous enough for a main course without the food looking marooned. Four colours are available - soft pink, blue, black and white - and because they are sold individually you can mix them across a table rather than committing to a matching set of eight.

The ceramic is glazed to a smooth, even finish that resists staining from tomato, turmeric and red wine, which is more than can be said for a lot of matt-glazed tableware. All sizes and colours are dishwasher safe and suitable for everyday use. Avoid sudden temperature changes - taking a cold plate straight into a hot oven - and do not use them under a grill. Stack with a cloth between plates if you want to keep the glaze unmarked.
