Nautical Compass Wall Clock

A compass rose is a good thing to put on a wall. The radiating points give a circular clock face far more structure than numerals alone, and the nautical association reads as considered rather than themed, so it works in a hallway or a study as easily as in a coastal cottage. This one is thirty centimetres across, which is large enough to read from across a room without dominating a chimney breast.

The face is cut from acrylic rather than printed on card behind glass, so the wind rose has some physical depth to it and the shadows shift slightly as the light moves through the day. The whole clock weighs around seven hundred grams, light enough for a single picture hook but substantial enough that it does not feel flimsy on the wall.

The movement is a silent sweep rather than a ticking quartz, which matters in a bedroom or a home office where a second hand clicking away becomes maddening. Two versions are offered: a plain one, and a version with a seven-colour LED backlight that outlines the face at night. Both run on a standard battery, and both hang from a single fixing on the back.
