Patterned Solar Garden Lantern

Most garden lights simply illuminate. This lantern does something more interesting: the pierced panels around the body cast the pattern outwards, so the paving, lawn or wall behind it picks up a lace of light and shadow that shifts as you walk past. On a still evening against a plain rendered wall the effect is genuinely striking, and it costs nothing to run.

The lantern charges from a panel in the lid and manages itself from there, waking at dusk and settling down again at first light. Because it is entirely self-contained there is no cable to route and no socket to find, so it can stand on a table, hang from a shepherd's crook or sit at the corner of a patio, and move again next week if the layout changes.

Construction is aimed at staying outside permanently - a sealed body, a weather-resistant finish and no exposed fixings to rust. There are no bulbs to replace and no batteries to buy. An occasional wipe of the lid keeps the charge strong through the duller winter months, and the pattern stays crisp year after year because nothing ever has to be opened up or cleaned inside the sealed housing.
