Resin Animal Head Wall Ornaments

Mounted animal heads have an obvious problem, and the answer to it is to make them obviously, cheerfully artificial. These five are cast in resin, hand-painted, and styled with the slightly stylised proportions of a storybook illustration rather than a trophy. They read as characters, not taxidermy, which is why they work as well above a child's bed or in a cloakroom as they do on a landing wall.

Five animals are offered and the scale varies with the subject. The deer is the largest at 14cm wide, 6cm deep and 36cm tall including the antlers, and is the one that carries a wall on its own. The hare stands 25cm tall, the fox 18.5cm and the bear 16cm, all comfortable above a shelf or a doorway. The mole is smallest at 10.5cm and works best in a group. Hung as a set of three or five at staggered heights, they become a wall arrangement rather than five separate ornaments.

Resin was chosen because it holds fine detail such as fur texture and antler tips, and it is light enough to hang from a single fixing rather than needing a heavy-duty bracket. The paint finish is UV resistant, so pieces hung in a bright room will not fade noticeably over time. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth and avoid solvents, which will dull the painted surface.
