The pineapple has been shorthand for a welcome for about three hundred years, which is why it keeps turning up on gateposts and newel posts. This one is a tabletop version, cast in resin with the overlapping scales of the fruit picked out in relief and the crown of leaves rising above them in a loose fan. The surface is smooth and evenly coloured rather than antiqued, so it reads as a modern object that happens to borrow an old motif.
Two sizes are offered: the medium stands 20 centimetres tall on a 9 centimetre base, and the large 25 centimetres on an 11 centimetre base. Each comes in white, gold or black. The medium works in a group, two or three along a shelf, or beside books, while the large has enough height to stand on its own on a console table or a chest of drawers. Whichever you choose, you receive a single ornament.
Stand it on a flat, level surface and keep it back from the edge where it could be knocked or pulled down, since resin is heavier than it looks and the leaf tips are firm enough to hurt. It is an ornament and not a toy, so keep it away from small children and pets. Clean it with a soft dry cloth or a barely damp one, avoid household solvents and abrasives, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun.
