Reversible Outdoor Patio Rug

Outdoor rugs solve a specific problem, which is that a patio or a deck is furnished like a room but floored like a path. This one lays a defined surface under a table and chairs so the seating area reads as a place rather than an expanse of paving. The geometric design is worked in black and grey on both faces, in reverse, so turning the rug over gives you a second look and spreads the wear.

The construction is flat-woven polypropylene, about five millimetres thick, which is the material of choice outdoors because it sheds water instead of absorbing it and does not rot when left damp. It handles sun, rain and the occasional spilled drink, and it will not hold the mildew smell that a natural fibre picks up after a wet week. Dirt is dealt with by sweeping, hosing down or wiping over, and the rug air dries quickly.

Three sizes are available, from a hundred and fifty-two by two hundred and forty-four centimetres up to a large two hundred and seventy-three by three hundred and sixty-six, which will take a six-seat table with room to pull chairs back. Weight the corners in exposed spots, lift and dry the rug if it has been standing in water, and roll rather than fold it for winter storage.
