Rice Paper and Iron Floor Lamp 60cm

The shade is handmade from rice paper, laid over a frame so the sheet buckles and pools slightly instead of pulling drum-tight. Those irregularities are the point: lit from inside, the paper glows unevenly, brighter where it stretches and warmer where it gathers, and the light it gives off is diffuse enough to sit beside a chair without glaring. The iron base is left dark and plain so nothing competes with the paper above it.

At 40 cm across and 60 cm tall this is a low floor lamp rather than a full-height one, which puts the glow at about the level of a chair arm or a low console. That suits a reading corner, the foot of a bed or a spot beside a sofa where a tall shade would sit awkwardly in the eyeline. The weighted iron base keeps it stable on a hard floor without needing a wide footprint.

A standard E27 lampholder takes an LED bulb, which is not included. Use an LED rather than a filament or halogen bulb and stay well within the wattage marked on the lampholder: the shade is paper and must never be allowed to get hot. Keep it clear of curtains, heaters and open flames, never drape anything over the shade, and switch it off when you leave the room. Dust the paper with a dry, soft brush only.
