River Resin Acacia Serving Board

A river board is made by splitting a plank, setting the two halves apart and pouring coloured resin into the gap, so the finished piece keeps the live edge of the timber on both sides of a smooth band of colour. Because the split follows the grain rather than a straight cut, no two boards are the same shape, and the blue here is deep enough to read as water rather than as plastic.

The timber is acacia, which is the sensible choice for a board that will be handled: it is dense, closes over knife marks better than softer woods, and has enough natural oil in it to resist moisture. The finish is food safe on both faces, so the board can be used for cutting on one side and serving on the other, or simply left on a worktop as an object.

At forty-six by twenty-three centimetres it holds a generous cheese selection with room for crackers, or works as a bread and charcuterie board down the middle of a table. Wash by hand with warm water and a little detergent, dry it standing on edge rather than flat, and give it a wipe of food-safe oil occasionally to stop the wood drying out. It is not dishwasher safe.
