Rubberwood Adjustable Desk Lamp

A desk lamp is only useful if the head goes where the work is, and most decorative ones do not. This one has an adjustable shade on a tilting joint, so the light can be dropped onto a keyboard, angled across a book or tipped up to bounce off the wall when the desk becomes a dressing table in the evening. The movement is stiff enough to hold position without needing to be retightened.

The base is solid rubberwood, a dense pale hardwood with a fine, even grain, turned to a fifteen centimetre disc. That gives the lamp enough weight at the bottom to stay put when the head is fully extended, which is the failure point on most lightweight desk lamps. The shade above it is pressed metal in a simple cone, and the whole thing stands forty-five centimetres tall.

Five shade colours are offered: white, green, yellow, pink and black. It takes a single E27 bulb, not supplied, and works with white, neutral or warm light depending on what you fit, so the same lamp can be set up for concentration or for winding down. Wipe the wood with a dry cloth and keep it out of direct sunlight, which will lighten the finish over time.
