Sakura Ceramic Hanging Bell 6cm

This is a single small bell rather than a rack of tubes, closer to a Japanese furin than to the long metal chimes most gardens carry. The glazed ceramic dome is painted with blossom and hung from a cord, and a light clapper inside gives a short, clear note that fades quickly instead of ringing on. Four glazes are offered: white, light pink, light blue and light green.

At 6 by 6 centimetres it is genuinely small, which is the point. It suits a porch hook, a balcony rail, the inside of an open window or a branch within arm's reach, where a full-size chime would be too much sound in too small a space. Because it is ceramic rather than metal, the tone is drier and softer, and it will not carry across a neighbour's garden.

Hang it somewhere sheltered. Ceramic is brittle and a hard knock against a wall or a window frame in a gale will crack it, so choose a spot with a little clearance and bring it indoors before winter if you can. Check the cord and the fixing at the start of each season. It is a decorative object rather than a toy, so hang it out of reach of children and pets.
