Sculpted Resin Wall Light

Cast in resin rather than pressed from metal, this sconce has the soft irregular surface of something shaped by hand. It measures sixteen and a half centimetres high and projects only eight from the wall, so it suits an alcove, a narrow landing or the wall above a bedside table where a shaded lamp would be in the way. The finish is matte and slightly chalky, closer to plaster than to plastic.

Three colours are offered and each changes the character of the piece. Grey is the most neutral, disappearing into a painted wall until it is lit. Brown warms it considerably and works alongside timber and leather. Green is the boldest, and in a hallway or a reading corner it reads as a small piece of sculpture that happens to give light. All three throw a soft upward and downward wash rather than a hard beam.

It takes one E27 lamp, not supplied, which means you choose the brightness and the tone. A warm low-wattage LED suits the scale of the fitting best. It is hardwired to a wall point and rated for dry indoor locations only. Resin should be wiped with a soft dry cloth rather than a household cleaner, and the lamp should be allowed to cool before the fitting is handled.
