Real peonies have a season of about three weeks and cost a fortune for every one of them. That is precisely why they are the flower most worth faking, and why a good silk peony is a better buy than a good silk rose. The hydrangea-peony form used here has densely packed petals that hide the join at the centre, which is where cheap artificial flowers usually give themselves away, and the silk takes light with a slight sheen rather than the flat plastic look of moulded blooms.
Each bundle carries five heads on a single stem group. The whole bundle stands 26cm tall and spreads about 14cm across, with each individual bloom around 7.5cm wide. That is a good scale for a small vase on a side table, a bathroom shelf or a bedside, and two or three bundles together fill a larger vase convincingly. Six colours are offered: white, champagne, light pink, dark pink, purple and a soft green that works as a filler alongside the others.
Artificial stems earn their keep in places real flowers struggle. A dark hallway, a windowless cloakroom, a holiday let, a desk you are away from for a week. They also do well in arrangements where you want a constant backdrop and swap one or two fresh stems in and out around them. Dust every few weeks with a soft brush or cool air, and reshape the petals by hand after storage.
