Slim Aluminium Over-Mirror Light 60cm

Sixty centimetres long and thirteen high, a plain aluminium bar designed to sit above a mirror and light the face in front of it evenly. The advantage over a downlight is straightforward: light coming from directly above and slightly forward removes the shadows under the eyes and chin that make a ceiling fitting so unflattering. It suits a dressing table, a hallway mirror or a bedroom vanity.

Fifteen watts is enough to light five to ten square metres, so it also works simply as a wall light above a headboard, a desk or a run of shelving. The bar is shallow and unobtrusive, with no visible fixings once it is up, and both finishes are matte rather than polished so they do not throw reflections back into the mirror. Black is the graphic option; gold warms a pale wall and ties into brass fittings.

One important point: although this style of fitting is often sold for bathrooms, it is rated for dry locations only and must not be installed in bathroom zones 0, 1 or 2, which covers the bath, the shower and the area immediately around them. Use it over a dressing table or a hall mirror instead. It is hardwired and should be installed by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated first.
