Solar Hanging Garden Lantern

Hung from a branch, a pergola beam or a shepherd's crook, this little lantern turns a dark corner of the garden into somewhere you actually want to sit. The light is warm rather than white, so it flatters planting and brickwork instead of bleaching them, and because it hangs rather than stands it lifts the glow to eye level where it does the most good on a summer evening.

There is no wiring and no plug. A solar panel in the crown charges the internal cell through the day, a dusk sensor switches the lantern on as the light drops, and a full charge carries it through around eight hours of darkness. That makes it genuinely portable: move it from the patio to the far end of the garden for an evening and back again, with nothing to unplug and no cable to trip over.

It measures 15 x 25 x 15cm, small enough to group in threes along a fence line and large enough to read as a proper lantern rather than a fairy light. The body is weather-resistant for year-round outdoor use. Site it where the panel gets several hours of direct sun, as shaded panels charge slowly and short winter days will reduce the run time considerably. Wipe the panel clear of dust and leaf fall occasionally to keep the charge up.
