Solar Panda Garden Stake Light 43cm

A cast resin panda sitting on a slim ground spike, 43 centimetres tall overall and just under seven centimetres wide, with a small solar panel above and an integrated LED that lights the figure from within at dusk. It is the kind of thing that marks the edge of a border or the turn of a path without needing a cable run to reach it, and it reads as an ornament by day.

The figure is moulded in resin with a polypropylene spike, which keeps the whole thing light at a kilogram and means there is nothing to corrode where it meets wet soil. The panel drives a single half-watt LED, so this is a soft marker light rather than a floodlight; it charges through daylight and switches itself on as the light falls, with no timer to set and no switch to remember.

Push the spike into soft ground rather than forcing it into hard or stony soil, and site it where the panel sees several hours of open sky, since shade under a hedge or a wall will shorten how long it runs. The LED is sealed in and cannot be replaced. Wipe the panel clear of leaves and dust occasionally, and bring the light indoors if a hard frost is forecast.
