Solar Square Garden Post Light 20cm

A square post light is the quiet workhorse of garden lighting: it marks a gate pier, a wall top or the head of a flight of steps without drawing attention to itself. This one is 20cm square in an iron frame with a high-clarity acrylic shade that spreads the light evenly rather than throwing a hotspot, and it holds its colour instead of yellowing after a season outdoors.

Everything runs from the sun. A monocrystalline panel in the cap charges a 4800mAh lithium cell through the day, and a full charge gives roughly ten to twelve hours of light — comfortably a whole winter night. The supplied remote switches between three light colours, warm, natural and cool white, so the fitting can be tuned to suit brick, stone or render, and the brightness can be dropped when you want atmosphere rather than illumination.

The whole unit is rated IP65, which means it is sealed against dust and against water jetted from any direction, so it copes with driving rain and hose-down cleaning alike. It bolts to a flat surface — a pier cap, a low wall, a decking post — and needs no cable, no trench and no electrician.
