Solid Wood Table Lamp 36cm

Cut from solid timber and left with a close, matt finish, this lamp is about as plain as a lamp gets, which is exactly its appeal. There is no visible fixing, no shade to gather dust and no contrast trim; the light emerges from a recess in the wood itself. On a bedside table or a desk it takes up very little visual space, which makes it a useful piece in a room that already has a lot going on.

It stands thirty-six centimetres tall and eighteen wide, so it holds its own on a wide surface without blocking a view or a window. The warm LED inside is fixed rather than replaceable, which keeps the body slim and avoids a bulb glowing through the timber. The light it gives is directional and fairly gentle, better suited to atmosphere and last-thing-at-night reading than to lighting a whole room on its own.

Solid wood moves a little with humidity, so small changes in the grain over time are normal rather than a fault. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight if you want the tone to stay even, and dust it with a dry cloth; furniture polish and wet wipes will both leave marks. Because the LED is integrated, there is no bulb to change, and the lamp should simply be recycled through electrical waste at the end of its life.
