Stained Glass Book Lamp

An open book, rendered in leaded stained glass and lit from within. The two halves rise like pages from a spine, each panel made up of coloured glass sections joined along soldered seams, so the light that comes through is broken into blocks of amber, blue, green and rose. It is a small object that changes a room after dark, throwing patches of colour onto the shelf and the wall behind it.

The construction is the traditional glass-in-glass method, cut and assembled by hand rather than printed onto a plastic panel, which is why the colours have real depth and the seams read as part of the design. That also means small variations between pieces, in the exact placement of the coloured sections and in the solder lines, are normal and expected. Unlit, it still works: daylight through the panels gives a stained-glass window effect in miniature.

It suits a bookshelf, a study desk, a bedside table or a windowsill, and it makes an obvious gift for a reader. Handle it as glassware: the panels are supported by their leading and will not survive a fall. Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush along the seams, and avoid glass sprays, which can sit in the joints. Place it where it will not be knocked.
