Steva Black Square Outdoor Step Light

The Steva is a 9cm recessed square that sits flush in a wall and lights the ground in front of it without lighting the whole garden. A run of fine louvres across the aperture cuts the glare, so what reaches the eye is the lit tread rather than the source itself. The black bezel recedes into dark render and stone during the day and only announces itself once it is switched on.

The body is metal with a glass diffuser and is sealed to IP65, so rain, dust and splashing water are not a problem outdoors. A 4W SMD LED is fitted and included, running on a 110-240V supply with warm light output. Because the lamp is integrated there is nothing to replace, and the low wattage means several can be wired along one route without drawing much between them.

Set into stair risers, a retaining wall, a deck edge or the side of a path, it marks the change in level after dark and makes the route readable at a glance. Recessing means the wall or riser has to be cut and prepared before fitting, and the connection is hardwired, so a qualified electrician should carry out the installation. Grit collects in the louvres outdoors and brushes out with a dry brush.
