Tamso Wood and Opal Glass Wall Light

Tamso sets a round wooden disc against the wall and floats an opal glass globe in the middle of it. The shape asks very little of a room. It sits close to the plaster, casts no hard shadow line and reads as much like a piece of joinery as a light fitting. Switched off it holds its own as a plain circle on the wall, and lit, the dished face bounces light back so the glow spreads rather than spotlighting one point.

The timber is finished in a pale natural tone that keeps the grain visible, and the disc measures 18 cm across with a 12 cm opal glass shade at its centre. Opal glass diffuses the lamp evenly, so there is no bright core to catch the eye at close range. The fitting is hardwired and takes a single G9 capsule up to 10 W, or the LED equivalent, and it can be run through a dimmer where one is already fitted.

That even output makes Tamso comfortable at eye level: a pair either side of a bed, a run along a landing, or one on each side of a mirror. It is damp rated, so a bathroom or a covered outdoor area such as a porch is within its range. Installation is a fixed wired connection, so allow for a qualified electrician. Wipe the timber and the glass with a dry cloth rather than a wet one.
