Teak Root Wood Decorative Bowl

A 30cm bowl carved from a single piece of teak root, so the grain twists and doubles back on itself in a way that turned or laminated wood never does. Every bowl is different — the shape follows the root it came from, and the pale and dark bands in the timber are the growth of the tree rather than a stain applied afterwards.

At this size it works hard. It is generous enough to be a fruit bowl on a kitchen counter, a bread or salad bowl on a table when people are eating, and a catch-all for keys and post on a hallway console the rest of the week. That flexibility is the reason a plain wooden bowl outlasts most decorative objects in a house.

Teak root is dense and naturally oily, which is why it has been used for kitchenware for centuries — it resists moisture and splitting better than most timbers. Wipe clean with a damp cloth rather than soaking or putting it in a dishwasher, and an occasional rub of food-safe oil will keep the grain dark and rich rather than letting it grey.
