Tessa Plush Interlocking Rug Tile

Tessa is a floor covering you build rather than buy in one piece. Each tile is a 30 x 30 cm square edged on all four sides with jigsaw teeth, so tiles clip into one another and hold their position without tools, adhesive or underlay. Lay as many as the room asks for and the rug takes the shape you give it: a square beneath a chair, a long run down the side of a bed, or a full floor from wall to wall.

The surface is a short, dense plush pile with a soft matte finish, carried on a lightweight foam core. Tiles are supplied in warm ivory and mid grey, which can be set as an alternating checkerboard, blocked into two halves, or laid in a single tone throughout. Because the colour sits tile by tile rather than in a woven pattern, the layout is yours to decide and yours to change later.

Modularity is the practical argument for it. A tile that has been marked or worn can be unclipped and replaced on its own rather than the whole floor being lifted, which suits a playroom, home office or rented flat. Children should be supervised around loose tiles while a layout is being built. Lay them on a clean, dry floor and lift and wipe individual tiles rather than soaking the whole run.
