Tiered Wooden Serving Stand

A stepped stand does something a flat table cannot: it puts three rows of food at three heights, so everything is visible and reachable at once. This one is built as three shallow wooden steps rising from a wide base — the shape used in farmhouse kitchens for cooling and displaying long before it became a styling device.

It is made from solid wood with the grain running across the treads, finished in food-safe oil that leaves the timber matte and slightly open rather than sealed under lacquer. Each step is deep enough to take a full plate, a row of cupcakes, or a line of small bowls, and the base is wide and flat so a loaded stand does not rock on an uneven table. The whole piece is a single joined unit with no fittings to loosen.

It works for afternoon tea, canapes and cheese, and it earns its place the rest of the year holding candles, small plants or spice jars on a shelf. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately; do not soak or put it in a dishwasher, and re-oil occasionally to keep the colour even. It also stacks flat against a wall when not in use, so it can live on a dresser or in a cupboard without demanding the shelf space a cake stand usually does.
