Tinted Glass Dome Table Lamp

A wide dome of tinted glass on a slim metal base, this is the kind of lamp that does most of its work during the day. The colour in the glass shifts as daylight moves across the room, so the lamp changes character between morning and late afternoon without anyone touching a switch. Turned on in the evening it settles into a warm, contained pool of light rather than trying to illuminate a whole room.

The dome measures roughly thirty centimetres across and stands about twenty-three centimetres high, which is a useful size: big enough to read as a proper lamp on a console or sideboard, small enough not to dominate a bedside table. The base is weighted so the glass sits securely, and the rotary switch is mounted on the body rather than the flex, which keeps the cable run clean along the back of a shelf.

Inside is a standard E27 screw fitting with a warm three thousand kelvin LED, running on ninety to two hundred and sixty volts. Because the shade is coloured glass rather than fabric, the light it casts takes on the tint of the dome, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing where to put it. Clean the glass with a soft damp cloth and dry it immediately so no water marks are left behind.
