Toucan Garden Ornament

Gardens in this country spend a good part of the year in shades of grey-green, which is exactly why a tropical bird works so well in one. This toucan stands 29cm tall in cast resin, with the oversized beak and the sharp colour blocking that make the species instantly readable from the far end of a lawn. Tucked at the edge of a border or perched on a low wall, it gives the eye somewhere to land.

Three colourways are available. The red is the boldest and reads from furthest away, so it suits a deep planted bed where it needs to cut through foliage. The orange is warmer and works well against terracotta, brick and gravel. The green is the most restrained of the three and half-hides among leaves, which is its own kind of pleasure when someone finally spots it.

Resin handles British weather far better than plaster or terracotta, shrugging off rain and frost without flaking, and it is light enough to reposition whenever the planting changes. The finish is applied by hand, so small variations between pieces are normal. It works equally well indoors in a conservatory or on a bright shelf. Rinse it down with clean water when it gets muddy, and bring it under cover during prolonged hard frost to protect the painted finish.
