Vaako Walnut LED Ceiling Light

A drum shade is the most forgiving shape a ceiling light can take, and this one keeps the form simple: a shallow cylinder with a diffused underside and a walnut-toned band around the edge. The finish is applied by hydro transfer rather than being veneer, so the grain wraps the curve without joins and does not lift at the seam the way a wrapped veneer eventually will.

The LED is integrated behind the diffuser and produces an even downward wash with the walnut band catching a little of the spill, which stops the fitting looking like a flat white circle when it is lit. Two light colours are offered. Warm white sits comfortably in bedrooms and hallways; cold white is the better choice for a landing, a study or anywhere the fitting is doing practical work.

The smaller version is forty centimetres across and fourteen deep, the larger fifty by seventeen. Both are metal-bodied with an acrylic diffuser, both operate on standard mains supply and both switch from an ordinary wall switch rather than a dimmer. Fit to an existing ceiling point; the fitting is not designed to be plugged in or suspended from a flex. Wipe the walnut band with a dry cloth, and avoid solvent cleaners which will lift the printed grain.
