Velaro Retro Outdoor Wall Lantern

The Velaro is the old workshop wall lamp brought up to a modern weather rating. A cast iron arm carries a domed milk glass shade, the glass is opaque so the bulb never shows, and the whole fitting is rated IP65. On a stone cottage, a converted barn or a Victorian terrace it looks like it has always been there, which is not something you can say about most outdoor lighting.

Three sizes are offered. The small is 31cm tall with a 15cm shade and suits a back door or a passage. The medium at 39cm tall and 17cm across is the usual choice for a front entrance. The large at 41cm tall and 20cm across has real presence on a wide facade or a courtyard wall, where a smaller lantern would vanish. Mounted either side of a door, the medium size gives the most balanced result on a standard domestic frontage.

It takes an E27 screw-fit bulb up to 60W, not supplied, so you can put a warm filament-style LED in it and get the period look without the running cost. Each fitting lights around five to ten square metres. At roughly 2kg it needs proper fixings, and as an outdoor mains fitting it must be installed by an electrician on a protected circuit.
