Daylight does the work here. Each light in this pair charges from the sun through the day and switches itself on again as the light drops, so there is no wall switch to remember and no cable to trench down the garden. A pack contains two lights, which is usually enough to frame a back door, mark the turn of a path, or lift the dark end of a fence run where a mains supply was never realistically going to reach.

The housing is polymer and the fitting is rated IP65, so rain, hose spray and a thoroughly wet British autumn are all taken in their stride. A charge of six to eight hours in good conditions returns roughly six to eight hours of light, which comfortably covers an ordinary evening outdoors. An automatic dusk and dawn sensor handles the timing for you, bringing each light on and switching it off again as the ambient level around it changes.

Fitting is a surface job. Choose a position that catches a fair share of the day's sun, mark your fixing points, and screw the bracket to a wall, fence panel or gatepost. Because there is no wiring involved, a light can be lifted and repositioned later in the year if a tree or new shed starts casting shade across it. Angling both units slightly downward gives a softer pool of light on the ground rather than glare at eye height.
