Wood and Rope Sail Wall Light

A wall light built like a small piece of rigging: a solid wood base, a length of natural hemp rope run through it, and the lamp held in the angle where the two meet. The silhouette reads as a sail, which sounds twee written down and is not in practice - the timber is plain, the rope is undyed, and the whole thing has the stripped-back look of workshop hardware rather than seaside souvenir.

It measures 30cm by 23cm, so it holds a stretch of hallway or a stairwell landing without dominating it, and the flat back sits close against the wall. Hemp and wood both take on colour slowly, so the fitting settles rather than dates. It looks best against plaster, painted brick or panelling, and it suits a room where the other timber is oiled rather than varnished.

This is a hardwired mains fitting. It must be installed by a qualified electrician, who should confirm the lampholder and the supply before connecting it, and the circuit must be isolated at the consumer unit before work begins. Use LED lamps only - the rope and timber sit close to the lampholder and neither should be exposed to the heat of a halogen or incandescent bulb. Dry indoor locations only; keep clear of steam and damp.
