Wooden Annual Rings Wall Clock

The face of this clock is a cross-section: concentric rings radiating out from the centre in the way a felled trunk shows its years. It is a quietly clever idea for a timepiece, and it means the decoration and the function are the same gesture. Against a white or plainly painted wall the warm grain does a lot of work, softening a room that has gone slightly too minimal without adding clutter.

Five finishes are offered, running from pale, almost bleached tones through to deeper coffee and walnut shades. Lighter options lift a north-facing room and sit well with Scandinavian and Japandi schemes; the darker ones hold their own against exposed brick, dark joinery or a heavily coloured wall. Because the pattern is concentric rather than directional, the clock hangs correctly whichever way round it goes and never looks as though the grain is running the wrong way.

It measures 30cm across and just 1.2cm deep, so it sits close to the wall rather than standing off it. A silent sweep movement keeps the room quiet, which makes it as suitable for a bedroom or nursery as for a kitchen, study, cafe or shop counter. One AA battery drives it and is not included. Hang it on a single fixing using the keyhole slot moulded into the back, and dust it with a dry cloth.
