Wooden Tripod Table Lamp 39cm

The tripod is one of those forms that has been in continuous production since the nineteen fifties because nothing has improved on it. Three splayed wooden legs give a wide, stable footprint on a narrow base area, the shade sits high enough to clear a book, and the open frame means the lamp does not visually block whatever is behind it on a sideboard or a chest of drawers.

Here the legs are solid wood with a clear finish so the grain stays visible, and the shade is a fabric drum sixteen centimetres across at the top. Fabric is the right material for a bedside lamp because it warms the light passing through it and takes the hard edge off the shadows. Two shade colours are offered: a clean white and a natural linen with a slightly coarser weave.

At thirty-nine centimetres tall with a fourteen centimetre base, it fits a bedside table without dominating it. It takes a single E27 bulb up to sixty watts, not supplied, so brightness and colour temperature are your choice. An LED at around six hundred lumens in warm white is the usual right answer for a bedroom. Wipe the shade with a soft brush rather than a damp cloth.
