Woven Seagrass Floor Plant Basket

A hand-woven rush basket built to stand on the floor and hold a plant pot, with a waterproof lining so it can take a pot that is watered in place without the base going soft. That lining is the detail that separates a basket that survives a year with a fiddle-leaf fig from one that quietly rots.

Plastic nursery pots are the fastest way to make an expensive plant look cheap, and dropping one straight into a woven basket is the fastest way to fix it. The texture of the rush sits well against green foliage and warms up a corner in a way ceramic rarely does, particularly against pale walls and wooden floors.

Three sizes cover most plants: small at roughly 20 x 25cm for a table-top or a small floor plant, medium at 27 x 30cm for a mid-size specimen, and large at 30 x 35cm for a full floor plant. Because it is not collapsible, it also works well as open storage for throws, magazines or toys when it is not holding a plant. Handmade, so allow 1-3cm variation in size.
