A wide, deep bowl tapers sharply towards a fine rim, which is the classic Burgundy shape and the reason the glass holds 720 ml without ever being filled near the top. The point of all that volume is surface area: a modest pour spreads thin across the base, and the narrowing rim gathers what comes off it. The long stem keeps a hand well away from the bowl so the wine is not warmed while it is being drunk.
It is made from crystal glass, clear and thin enough at the rim that it more or less disappears against the lip. Filled to the widest point of the bowl it takes a generous single glass and leaves a good two thirds of the volume empty above the wine, which is exactly what a Pinot Noir, a Nebbiolo or an older Rioja wants. The proportions are equally at home with a lighter red served slightly cool.
Choose a single glass or a set of two. Hand wash in warm water with a little detergent, supporting the bowl rather than twisting it against the stem, and dry with a lint-free cloth while still warm to avoid water marks. The glass is thin and will chip if knocked against a tap or stacked, so wash it on its own. Do not pour hot liquid into it and do not put it in a freezer.
