The plain, legible clock face that schools use, in a 25cm ABS case with a glass lens over the dial. Every hour is numbered and the minute divisions are marked around the edge, which is exactly what makes it useful in a kitchen, a home office or a child’s room where the time actually needs reading rather than glancing at. Five case colours are offered.

White and black are the neutral choices; pink, blue and red give a child’s room something to match to. The movement is a silent sweep, so there is no tick to carry across a quiet room, and it runs from a single AA battery, not supplied. A hanging hook is included, and the case is light enough that a plaster fixing will hold it.

A glass lens rather than an acrylic one keeps the dial clear over years of wiping and does not haze the way plastic does. Clean it with a barely damp cloth. Mount it out of a child’s reach and check the wall for concealed pipes and cables before drilling, as with anything fixed at head height or above. In a home office the fully numbered dial earns its place quickly, being far quicker to read at a glance during a call than a minimalist face.
