Concrete Pendant Light, Six Forms

Cement is an unusual material for a shade because it does the opposite of what a shade normally does: none of the light passes through it, so all of it is thrown down in a tight, defined pool. Over a kitchen island or a work surface that is exactly right, and the weight of the material gives the fitting a stillness that a metal shade never manages.

Six forms are offered and they behave quite differently. The narrowest is six centimetres across and thirty-five tall, a slim tube that suits hanging in a row of three over a counter. The widest is twenty-five centimetres across and twenty deep, a broad cone that covers a dining table on its own. The four in between step through the range, so a pair or a trio can be mixed at different heights.

Each takes a single E27 bulb up to forty watts, not supplied, and will dim if you use a dimmable bulb with a compatible switch. The cord is adjustable at installation. Because cement is heavy, check that the ceiling point is rated for the weight before fitting, and hang the shade high enough that nobody at the table is looking straight into the bulb.
