Cut Crystal Whisky Tumbler 250ml

A single whisky tumbler in cut crystal, made in the Japanese manner with a deeply faceted base and plain, polished walls above. The cutting is the whole point. Light entering the top of the glass is bent by the facets and thrown back up through the spirit, so a measure of whisky sits on what looks like a bed of prisms. Set it on a dark table under a low lamp and the effect is considerable.

It holds 250ml, which is generous for a spirit glass and deliberately so: there is room for a large ice cube or two, or for a long drink, without the liquid reaching the rim. The proportions are squat rather than tall, 7.3cm across and 7cm high, so it sits low and stable in the hand and is difficult to knock over on a side table. The walls are thick enough to feel substantial and to keep a chilled drink cold.

Crystal glass takes a cut edge more crisply than soda-lime glass, which is why the facets here look sharp rather than softly moulded. Wash by hand in warm water and dry with a soft cloth; a dishwasher will dull the polish over time and the detergent can cloud the cut surfaces.
