Fan Form Art Deco Wall Light 43cm

A tall fan of pressed iron, 43 centimetres from the wall bracket to the top and only 18 across, with the ribs stepping outward the way deco metalwork did in the twenties and thirties. The lamp sits behind the fan so the light rakes up through the ribs and throws their shadow onto the plaster above, which is a far more interesting effect than a shade that simply glows.

The proportions make it useful in narrow places. A hallway, the wall beside a stairwell, the return next to a chimney breast - anywhere you want height rather than width and cannot afford much projection. A pair either side of a mirror or a dining room sideboard is the classic arrangement and the one the shape was designed for. The fan side measures 17 centimetres, so it keeps well clear of a shoulder.

Gold is the period-correct finish and is warm rather than brassy; black is the more restrained choice and reads as graphic against a pale wall. The fitting takes a G9 lamp, not supplied, up to the usual small-capsule rating, and is not dimmable unless a dimmable bulb is fitted to a dimmer circuit. It runs at 90-260 volts, is hardwired, and should be installed by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated. Dry locations only, not bathroom zones 0, 1 or 2.
