Folded Paper Lantern Shade

A pendant shade folded from a single sheet of stiffened paper, in the tradition of the paper lanterns that have hung in Japanese and Scandinavian homes for a century. The folds do two jobs at once: they hold the shape without an internal frame, and they break the light into bands so the lit shade has depth to it rather than glowing as a flat, even balloon.

Nine forms are offered and they are genuinely different shapes rather than colourways - a wide flat disc at 43 by 25 centimetres, a tall narrow drum at 26 by 35, a near-cube at 30 by 30, and six more between them. The published dimensions for each are in the list below so you can pick against the space rather than guessing. Two or three different forms hung together at staggered heights is the most rewarding way to use them.

The paper is a waterproofed specialty stock, so it copes with a kitchen or a bathroom landing better than plain washi, and it stays white rather than yellowing. The shade fits a standard E27 lamp holder and runs at 90 to 260 volts. Use an LED bulb only and keep the lamp well clear of the paper: never fit an incandescent or halogen lamp, and keep the shade away from candles, heaters and any other open flame.
