Glass Dome Ceiling Light 30cm

The dome is the oldest ceiling light shape there is and it has stayed in use because nothing else spreads light quite so evenly from a single point. This version strips it back to a clean glass hemisphere on a narrow metal base, thirty centimetres across and twenty-seven deep, with no visible fixings and no decorative collar to date it.

The glass is the interesting part. It is opaque enough to soften the source but not so dense that it swallows the output, so the dome itself glows rather than simply hiding the bulb. Against a white ceiling in the white finish it almost disappears in daylight; in black it becomes a deliberate full stop, which suits a hallway with dark paint or a room with strong joinery.

It takes a single G9 bulb, which is not supplied, giving you control over both brightness and colour temperature. G9 LEDs are compact and run cool, so they suit an enclosed shade better than a filament bulb would. The fitting is hardwired at mains voltage and mounts flush to an existing ceiling point, and it is intended for dry indoor rooms rather than bathrooms. The dome lifts off the base for cleaning, so the inside can be dusted without taking the whole fitting down.
